Ultrasound Steroid Injections

Ultrasound guided steroid injections are a commonly used method of pain relief, designed to reduce inflammation and promote healing in the affected area. This procedure generally takes 15-30 minutes.

Our Radiologist will use ultrasound guidance to administer medication (usually corticosteroid and local anaesthetic) directly into the joint or affected area. Using Ultrasound ensures our specialists have direct visualisation of the needle path and can determine the exact location of the nerve or joint causing the pain.

Steroid Injections are considered a safe procedure, however with any injection there can be some risks involved. These are rare, but include:

  • Bruising or swelling at the injection site

  • Localized infection at the injection site

  • Temporary discomfort

  • Allergic reaction to medication

Aftercare:

  • You may resume daily/non-strenuous activities immediately

  • Do not overexert the joint for 3-5 days (manual labour/heavy lifting/intense exercises)

  • You should follow up with your GP within 2 weeks.

  • Contact your GP immediately if you experience any of the following:

    • Fever, chills or generally unwell in the days following the injection

    • Redness, pain or swelling at the injection site

    • A significant increase of pain in the area following the injection
