Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an interventional procedure involving the patient's own blood, extracted and spun in a machine called a Centrifuge (which will divide the blood into separate components) and injected back into the affected area, designed to promote ‘natural’ healing.

The activation of the concentrated platelets releases growth factors designed to stimulate and increase the number of regenerative/reparative cells your body produces, significantly assisting in the healing process. The main use of PRP is to promote tendon healing, commonly around the arm and leg joints, but also in any area where tendons attach to bones. More recently there has been a good response to PRP injected directly into joints to help with cartilage disease.

PRP is used mostly for soft tissue issues, such as:

  • Minor Achilles tears

  • Biceps tendon tears

  • Tennis Elbow or Golfers Elbow

Risks involved with PRP are very limited, as the solution is derived of your own blood, meaning your body should not negatively react in any way. However, with any injection there is a small risk of infection over the insertion site.

Aftercare: We advise minimal use of the area for two weeks after the procedure. You will be asked to wear a sling or a brace in the 14 days following to ensure maximum healing ability.

Because PRP is intended to assist in long-term healing, you may not notice a reduction in pain or increased function right away. The process of PRP requires time and rehabilitation for maximum results.

PRP is not a Medicare eligible procedure and out of pocket costs will apply. You can discuss the cost with our team on 07 5391 0366.
