Facet Joint Injections

Facet Joints are sliding joints, located at the back of the spine that allow for flexibility and movement. Sometimes, these joints can become arthritic or inflamed causing significant pain and stiffness. By injecting a mix of local anaesthetic and cortisone (anti-inflammatory steroid) into the specific joint or joints causing the issue, pain can be reduced and mobility increased.

Most patients report significant reduction in pain for 3-12 months following this procedure.

The procedure should not be a painful experience. You may experience some minor discomfort or feel pressure. Local anaesthetic is administered into the area to ensure patients have the most comfortable experience possible.

This procedure is performed in our clinic, using the guidance of CT to administer the steroid into the exact location. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, and you should be able to return home immediately.

For 3-5 days following, we recommend you do not undertake any strenuous activity, heavy lifting or excessive exercise.

Although this is considered a safe procedure and minimally invasive procedure, any injection comes with a small risk of:

  • Discomfort at the injection site

  • Bleeding

  • Infection over the injection site

  • Allergic reaction to medication

Contact your GP immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Fever, chills or generally unwell in the days following the injection

  • Redness, pain or swelling at the injection site

  • A significant increase of pain in the area following the injection
